Hans-Jörg Trenz New EURECO-professor at the Centre for Modern European Studies

EURECO, the joint research initiative of  the University of Copenhagen, is in the process of hiring four professors in European studies (two in Political Science, one in Law and one in Humanities). The Humanities professor is now found and will start April 1, 2011. He will be professor in Modern European Studies with special reference to European media culture at the Department of Media, Cognition and Communication, Section for Film and Media Studies. In addition, he will have special tasks and obligations for CEMES and EURECO.

Hans-Jörg Trenz, b. 1966, is a German citizen, but has since 2005 been professor at ARENA, the Centre for European Studies at University of Oslo, Norway. He studied sociology, criminology, romance languages and literature at the University of Saarland, Germany, University of Bari, Italy, and Central University of Barcelona Spain and obtained his degree in 1993. He took his PhD in social and political sciences at the European University Institute, Florence Italy with the dissertation Mobilising collective identities: public discourse on immigration in Germany and Portugal (1999) and his habilitation (professoral competence) at the Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany in 2004. Having lived and worked in many European countries, Hans-Jörg Trenz has good language skills in German, English, Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
He has authored and edited seven books (one in Spanish, three in German and three in English) and published more than 60 articles. The large part of his publications deal with aspects of media and political communication in Europe applying a public sphere perspective to the process of European integration and analysing both print and new media. His writings also address questions of language, ethnicity, collective identity, civil society and democracy.
Hans-Jörg Trenz has been involved in many interdisciplinary large scale European projects, and especially since 2003 he been a partner in several EU Framework program research projects: ‘Organized Civil Society in Europe’ (FP5, 2003-2005), ‘CONNEX’ (FP6, 2004-2008), coordinator of the WP on ‘Public sphere and civil society’ under the FP6 project RECON (2007-2011) and ‘EUROPOLIS’ (FP7, 2008-2010)
